Bringing a new puppy home is a very joyful experience, but it can also come with a bit of stress. Many new pet parents feel confused on the very first day about what to do and what not to do.
In this post, I’ll share 7 of the most important tips that I’ve personally experienced and learned from many pet owners.
1. Keep the First Day Simple
As soon as you bring your puppy home, many people tend to take them everywhere and start feeding them a lot. Don’t do that. On the first day, just let them rest, play a little, and explore their new home. Too much excitement can stress the puppy.
2. Set a Feeding Schedule
A consistent feeding schedule helps a lot with potty training. Give small meals 3–4 times a day. Start with the same diet the breeder was giving, and then gradually make changes.
3. Start Potty Training Early
This should be your top priority. Take your puppy outside after every meal, after sleeping, and after playtime. Praise them a lot for every successful potty – it’s the biggest reward for them.
4. Handle Chewing and Biting Properly
Puppies are teething, so they tend to chew everything. Give them proper toys (rubber and rope toys work best). If they bite you, say “Ouch” loudly and then ignore them.
5. Socialization is Important
Slowly introduce your puppy to different sounds, people, and other pets. This helps build a confident personality.
6. Vet Visit and Vaccination Schedule
Take your puppy to the vet within the first 3–4 days. Set up a proper vaccination and deworming schedule. A healthy puppy is a happy puppy.
7. Be Patient – It’s a Process
Puppy training doesn’t happen overnight. There will be accidents, and things might get damaged – don’t get angry. With consistency and love, everything improves.
Final Tip: Spend some quality time with your puppy every day. It’s not just good for them, but also very relaxing for you.
